Police arrest 70 suspects in Ogun state, recover 15 pump action guns

- The Ogun state police command parades suspected criminals at its headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta

- The state commissioner of police, Ahmed Iliyasu, says the suspects were arrested from various locations in the state in an operation tagged criminals mop up

- 31 suspected cultists were among those paraded

The Ogun state police command has recovered 15 pump action guns and 14 cut to size locally made pistols from suspected criminals whose offences ranged from armed robbery, kidnapping impersonation to cultism, car snatching and ritual killing.

The police made the disclosure on Wednesday, October 4, when it paraded the suspects at the command’s headquarters at Eleweran, Abeokuta, The Punch reports.

The state commissioner of police, Ahmed Iliyasu, said the suspects were arrested from various locations in the state in an operation tagged criminals mop up.

Among those paraded were 31 cultists who were arrested at a hotel in Okeyidi area of Abeokuta, the state capital during an initiation ceremony.

Others are two suspects, arrested for ritual killing, four for kidnapping, while Twenty-eight other suspects were arrested for armed robbery.

The police also got a break in the operation as a member of the robbery gang who shot and wounded the divisional police officer of Ogbere police station on September 13, was paraded among the suspected criminals.

Meanwhile, a report by The Punch indicates that a professor in UNIBEN has been killed by unknown gunmen.

The staff of the University, identified as Professor Paul Otasowie, was said to have been shot dead by the armed men in front of his residence.

According to the report, the incident happened on Ekehuan road in Oredo local government area of the state on Wednesday, October 4.

It is however not clear if the the professor was assassinated or gunned down by suspected armed robbers.

The late Professor Otasowie was a professor in the schools department of electrical and electronics engineering.
