16 ‘pilgrims’ die in Kebbi, Niger state boat mishap

Not less than 16 people have been reported dead in a boat mishap while trying to catch a glimpse of an Arabic inscription on a rock inside River Niger.

Punch reports that the tragedy struck on Tuesday, October 4, between Rofia and Mauta in Agwata village in Borgu local government area of the state.

Legit.ng gathered that the incident allegedly occurred when the boat carrying about 50 passengers coming from Zamare in Kebbi state hit a tree and capsized.

It was learnt that 16 bodies were recovered, while two persons are still missing and the rest were saved alive by local divers in the area.

Hussaini Abdullahi, the public relations officer of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), confirmed the incident.

Abdullahi said the agency was in touch with the community to get the accurate number of those involved in the accident.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that a female pilgrim from Bauchi state was left in Saudi Arabia following the loss of her passport.
