On September 20, 2017, Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information declared that the IPOB group (Indigenous People of Biafra) would have caused the country to go into a crisis if not for the prompt reaction by the President.
At the same time, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari began the procedure for proscribing the above-mentioned group. The minister mentioned this news on IPOB during his speech at the State House Press corps in Abuja regarding the current situation in Nigeria.
So, what should we know about IPOB latest news?
The Minister stated that the President confirmed the procedure of IPOB proscription. Before leaving for the 72nd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Muhammadu Buhari endorsed the banning of the group, saying the process was underway.
While he agreed that certain individuals and groups have the right to protest, he insisted that they must achieve their goals within the law. Violence in no way should be applied. Lai Mohammed claimed if an organization resorted to violence, it becomes illegal.
Regarding the latest on IPOB, he avoided specifying in what way IPOB will be proscribed: either by Governors of the South Eastern States or through the help military if it is seen as a terrorist organization. Nevertheless, the Minister noted that IPOB was involved in terrorist actions.
He said that the Indigenous People of Biafra organized military groups, had clashes with Nigerian army and tried to seize weapons from soldiers. They used cold steel arms and Molotov cocktails. Besides, IPOB members blocked the roads and extorted money from residents. Additionally, their leader openly urged to take up arms.
The official assured that no army in the world would tolerate the actions of ta group like IPOB, and no army would ignore a situation where the country is being attacked by a band of robbers.
The Minister hailed the rapid response of the South East States governors and their colleagues from the Northern part of the country as well as the traditional rulers. They didn’t let the riots break out.
He thanked the South East governors, as they made it clear to the IPOB that no one would support their violent actions. The governors blocked the oxygen for the radical attempts of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Mr. Lai Mohammed argued that the IPOB was created to oppose the administration of President Buhari and was financed by those who did not agree with its politics. Also, he noted that Indigenous People of Biafra wrote to governments and parliaments of Western countries and distributed accusations of genocide using a fake video about the murders, to mislead people.
The task of Nigeria now is to confront this misinformation. The minister said that IPOB had opened a financial head office in France and a radio station in the UK. He assured that the Government would cease sponsoring the IPOB by the Nigerian diaspora.
