Nigeria should have one-child policy - Mixed reactions from Nigerians

The one-child policy, a part of the family planning policy, was a population planning policy of China. According to Wikipedia, it was introduced in 1979 and began to be formally phased out in 2015. The policy allowed exceptions for many groups, including ethnic minorities.

In 2007, 36% of China's population was subject to a strict one-child restriction, with an additional 53% being allowed to have a second child if the first child was a girl.

Provincial governments imposed fines for violations, and the local and national governments created commissions to raise awareness and carry out registration and inspection work.

Do you think such a policy should be introduced in Nigeria? As Africa’s most populous country with a very high poverty rate, the increasing population has been a source of concern for decades.

Below are some reasons Nigerians have given for why the country should have a one-child policy or why it should not:

1. Joy Otobo said on Quora: "The family is just like jollof rice. It's easier to produce high functioning, well adjusted individuals from a smaller family unit. And let's face it, most people that have a lot of children in Nigeria, don't have the resources to take care of them."

2. Another said: "Well, I dont support a one-child policy because I think it wouldn't be feasible in Nigeria. Most of our cultures encourage large family units with plenty wives and children so demanding each family have just one child will be too severe."

3. Elaiho IK said: "This will not work because the life expectancy of the average Nigerian is not high. With things like. Poor security, high level of stress, poor health care, poor quality of life and unhealthily eating.

The population would be come aged. More older people in society. Which would reduce the work force."

4. Another person said: "Good God NO. For several reasons. First of all. Are we really over populated? The whole of African population. Is less than that of China or India.

Africa: 1.216 billion

India: 1.324 billion

China: 1.379 billion

So Africa been over populated is a myth. It is the inability to feed themselves that is a problem."

5. Funmike Ibidun said: "No,not yet. It wouldn't work now as the means of enforcing it isn't available. Two, religion will be bought into it,unending debates upon debates. Three,Nigerians are not ready for it."

In Nigeria, a birth certificate is very important especially for official purposes and for a lot of applications.
