- Governor Nyesom Wike has called on the Nigerian church to speak up against the illegal actions of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration
- Wike said the church must work towards preventing the present administration from plunging Nigeria into crisis
- He also said Nigeria needs as many voices of truth as possible to checkmate the excess of the government of the day
The governor of Rivers state Nyesom Wike has urged the church to speak up against the "illegal and corrupt" action of the federal government.
Wike said such effort from the church will prevent Nigeria from drifting into crisis.
Speaking at the 12th General Synod of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion at the St. Paul's Cathedral in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, Wike said there is no hope for Nigerians as long as the state of affiars in the country does not conform to ideas of justice, democracy and rule of law.
He also said the country need as many voices of truth as possible to checkmate the excess of the government of the day.
He said the church cannot continue to keep quiet while things go wrong in the nation.
Wike said: “People say power of any kind corrupts, but political power can be more vicious if exercised unchecked and in disregard of democratic norms.
“While we all support the Federal Government’s much-vaunted, but pretentious fight against corruption, it is patently wrong to fight corruption with corruption and double-speak or by side-stepping the rule of law, disobeying court orders and blackmailing the judiciary to submission."
Wike also asked to church to remain active moral guardians of political powers in Nigeria.
“How can the Federal Government justify the situation where former public office holders from the Peoples Democratic Party are continuously harassed, hunted and hounded with corruption charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, while at the same time sparing those other members who defected to the All Peoples Congress of similar investigations and treatment, except the pure vendetta against His Excellency, Dr. Bukola Saraki for daring to contest the office of the Senate Presidency against the wish of the cabals in his party?"

“What has become of the case of those who were arrested for printing fake ballot papers with INEC’s authentic serial numbers to be used to rig the December 2016 legislative re-run elections?
“Have we not been vindicated by the recent judgments of the election tribunals, which strangely but questionably accepted and based their judgments on the fake results presented to them from the custody of the Nigerian Police, which actively and shamelessly participated in the rigging process?" he queried.
NAIJ.com earlier reported that Governor Wike had assigned offices to new commissioners recently sworn by the state.
The governor during the event said the state demands 100% loyalty from the new commissioners.
He also said that the tasks and responsibilities ahead of the commissioners require total commitment.
