How Nigerian government caused ASUU strike - Obasanjo

- Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president has revealed the root cause of the current Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike

- Obasanjo said the government of late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua allows itself to be stampeded into signing agreement

- He said the current government may now have to renegotiate base on a new agreement

Olusegun Obasanjo, former Nigerian president on Thursday, August 18, remarked about the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Reports have it that Obasanjo said the current ASUU strike could attributed to the government of late president Umaru Musa Yar’Adua for agreeing to certain demands made by the body.

NAIJ.com gathered that he made this known at a book launch in Ibadan, the Oyo state.

The former Nigerian president explained that the administration should not have allowed itself to be force into signing agreements without full consultations.

He said: ''Government allows itself to be stampeded into signing agreement particularly when one group or the other withdraws their service and go on strike.

''After the agreement has been signed, without full consultation within government, and implementation becomes an issue.

''But an agreement is an agreement whoever the agent is that signed that agreement on your behalf, you are bound by it.

''You may now have to renegotiate to have a new agreement but the agreement earlier signed remains an agreement.

''The universities teachers go on strike, there is an agreement; doctors go on strike, there will be a special agreement''.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had reported that Obasanjo sent a strong message to young Nigerians hoping to take over the mantle of leadership in the 2019 general elections.
