For the love of Nollywood: 7 Nigerian films to watch

Nollywood has come of age. If there is anyone who still turns their noses up at Nigerian films, simply show the person some of the movie trailers in this post.

Yes, more work needs to be done, but gone are the days when mediocrity was the other of the day. That said, below are six Nollywood films you should really check out.

1. On Time

Produced by fast rising actress Maryam Charles, On Time tells the story of a disabled woman who overcomes serious family challenges to find the love of her life. It stars veteran actor Jibola Dabo, Loveth Efenudu, Emma Efordi, and Maryam Charles herself.

2. My Wife and I

An Inkblot and Filmone production, this film stars popular actors Omoni Oboli and Ramsey Nouah playing the role of a couple who through some ‘miracle’ switch bodies. What follows is a roller coaster of emotions. Ngozi Nwosu, Rachael Oniga, Jemima Osundae, Dozie Onyiruika, Seyi Law, and Sambasa Nzeribe also make appearances in the film. It was directed by Bunmi Ajakaiye.

3. Alter Ego

Omotola Jalade Ekeinde’s big return to the big screen, it sees her play the part of Ada Igwe a fearless human and child’s right activist whose main focus is seeing s*x offenders and child molesters put behind bars. Regardless of who they may be in society, rich or poor. However, she constantly struggles with her alter ego Roxy – a woman with high sexual appetite. The synopsis alone is enough reason to watch it. Wale Ojo, Dejumo Lewis, Kunle Remi, Jide Kosoko,Esther Eyibio, Franca Brown, Emem Isong and Victor Olaotan also star in the movie.

4. Hakkunde

Asurf Oluseyi has been at his chosen craft of filmmaking for a while now. Having cut his teeth making short films, his feature film directorial debut has gotten mostly positive reviews. Hakkunde tells the story of a long-time unemployed graduate; Akande. Faced with life's pressures, he decides to relocate to Kaduna from Lagos when an opportunity presents itself. His expectation is however cut short and Akande must make a decision to either learn to survive in a faraway land or return back to failure. Frank Donga is the lead actor in this film supported by the likes of Ali Nuhu, Seyi Law, Toyin Abraham, Maryam Booth, Ibrahim Daddy, Isa Bello Ja, Rahama Sadau and Hadiza Soja.

5. Banana Island Ghost

One reason many people have given as to why they went to see this movie is to watch popular comedienne Chigul in action. The movie tells the story of a ghost, Patrick (Patrick Diabuah), who doesn't want to go to heaven because he doesn’t have a soulmate. He convinces God to give him three days to fall in love and granting his request, God pairs him with the hard to love Ijeoma (Chigurl). Ijeoma has just three days to get 18 million Naira to prevent the bank from reclaiming and selling her father's house in Banana Island to a billionaire, Mr King (Ali Nuhu). Saidi Balogun, Akah Nnani, Tina Mba, and Bimbo Manuel also star in the movie

6. Tatu

If you are someone who loves epic films, then this movie is for you. Another amazing fact about this film is that it was adapted from a book written by Dr Abraham E. Nwankwo, the recently retired Director General, Debt Management Office. It stars Segun Arinze, Desmond Elliott, Toyin Abraham, Gabriel Afolayan, Rahama Sadau, Sambaza Nzeribe, Funlola Aofiyebi-Raimi, Hafiz Oyetoro and Frank Donga.

7. Mentally

Adekunle Gold, Frank Donga, Woli Arole, Yaw and others star in this film that tells the story a young Nigerian man, Akin, who despite his mother’s warnings, decides to relocate to Lagos where his only friend, Emeka (a former schoolmate) promises him enormous opportunities of having a better life. His first experience in Lagos takes him on a journey – unprecedented, but eventually an eye opener – that makes him re-evaluate the choice he’s just made. It was directed by James Abinibi.
