He stated: “You are talking about N500, 000, it’s beyond that.

“A serving police officer aware of the trend has told me that they pay as much as N2.5 million to get special promotion.

“Other sources have also confirmed to me. So it is nothing but fact.’’

The anti-corruption committee member disclosed that upon resumption of the Senate next month, he would discuss the issue with the leadership of the upper legislative chamber.

He stated further: “Corruption is not only associated with money; it has many forms, and money for promotion is part of it.

“We have to urgently address this because the consequence is what we are witnessing today."

A serving police officer who also spoke about the matter on the condition of anonymity decried the deplorable situation, saying it was affecting officer’s morale and performance.

He said: “I’m tired of the bribe for promotion. Junior officers are being promoted and deployed to strategic locations.

“I swear if I have capital I would’ve resigned from the force.”

The Police Service Commission has however denied the report. Ikechukwu Ani, the spokesman of the commission stated: “It is not true. The commission has not and will never collect bribes for promotion.

“The IGP sends recommendations and the commission considers the promotion and takes a decision.”
