BREAKING: Unknown gunmen attack Anambra church, between 15-50 reported dead (video)

- A church in Anambra state has been attacked by unknown gunmen and several persons have been killed

- According to news reports the state governor, Willie Obiano has called for calm as security operatives swung into action

- The commissioner of police in the state also confirmed the attack

St. Philips Catholic Church in Ozubulu located in Ekusigo local government area of Anambra state was attacked this morning, Sunday, August 6 and several persons have been reported killed by gunmen.

The attackers and their motive have not been established but security operatives are said to have swung into action as investigations have begun.

Willie Obiano, the state governor has called for calm and he has also visited the scene of the attack to commiserate with the parishioners.

According to Channels TV, Governor Obiano condemned the attack and promised to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice. Garba Baba Umar, the Commissioner of police in the state, also confirmed the attack.

An eyewitness reportedly said: "A clearer version of the incident from the eye witness box revealed that the gunmen came to assassinate Bishop (drug lord) and his father but couldn’t find them in their house went into the church built by the same Bishop to hunt for their targets.

"On their arrival in the church, they put off the generator supplying power to the church and started shooting sporadically searching for their targets..

"My take is that the influence of amphetamine and other hard substances at work… When we advise our fellow youths to stay away from hard substances and other harmful practices."

According to Vanguard, 15 were killed and 21 wounded, some other media houses reported 29 people dead.

Legit.ng earlier reported that youths suspected to be members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) reportedly disrupted a church programme attended by a governorship aspirant in Anambra state.

The attack occurred at Odoekpe, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state and involved Godwin Ezeemo, who is running on the platform of the Progressives Peoples Alliance.
