Emir of Kano tells FG how to win the war against corruption
- Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi listed the lack of discipline, lack of sanctions, lack of monitoring and the lack of evaluation as the four major problems aiding corruption in Nigeria
- While bashing companies doing business in Africa for taking their money to tax havens to avoid payment of taxes, the Emir of Kano also scolded Nigerians for their refusal to pay taxes
- The monarch appealed to the media to keep monitoring corruption cases, and reminding the EFCC about them
The Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has been given some profound advice by the Emir of Kano Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi 11, about how to effectively wage war against corruption.
According to reports, Sanusi stated that unless there are appropriate sanctions for offenders and monitoring of corrupt cases by the media, the war against corruption will not be won.

The monarch made his comments on Wednesday August 2, while speaking at the opening of the “International Conference on Tax Havens and the Developing World: The Global Dimension,” which was organized by the Centre for General Studies in conjunction with the office of International Programmes, University of Ibadan.
According to the royal father who was represented by the Sarkin Shanun Kano Alhaji Shehu Mohammed, the four major problems aiding high levels of corruption in Nigeria and other developing countries in Africa and Asia in general are lack of discipline, sanctions, monitoring and evaluation of corrupt cases.
He stated: “There are four major problems that is aiding corruption in Nigeria.
“One is lack of discipline, the second one is lack of sanctions, the third is lack of monitoring and the forth is evaluation.
“Lack of discipline is paramount in this country, if we tell our people to be disciplined, it is the first way to discourage corruption.
“Lack of sanctions: I know the EFCC man that is here, they are working, they are fine policemen who are good in forensic analysis; but if sanctions can be where they should be, I can tell you that in six months we can fight corruption.
“Lack of monitoring and evaluation of corruption cases: The press is not monitoring corruption cases. I wish the press can keep their diaries and remind the EFCC of all the corruption cases. There is no monitoring of the cases.
“I want to suggest this to the conference and I believe this is what the conference will address”.
Lamenting over the poor rate of tax payment in Africa, Sanusi stated that most Nigerians quote laws to disobey the laws at the expense of the country’s socio-economic development.
He also lamented over the fact that most companies and individuals who are supposed to pay taxes in developing countries in Africa and Asia hide under the guise of tax havens, in order to avoid tax payment.
He stated: “Most Nigerians do want to pay tax, most Nigerians uses laws to disobey the law.
“Most individuals and companies in Africa and Asia prefer to take their money to tax havens to avoid payment of taxes.
“Corruption is the biggest problem that is encouraging tax heaven.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that a report by Reuters revealed that president Muhammadu Buhari's anti-corruption war has stalled.
The report which looked into the nature of the fight against corruption in Nigeria by the current administration, said president Buhari has achieved very little.
The report noted that some of the processes the administration put in place to prosecute the war were weak and not long-lasting.
