500 members abandon APC for PDP in Delta state as crisis rocks the party

- The All Progressives Congress has lost over 500 members to the People Democratic Party in Delta state

- The loss is due to the current crisis rocking the party in the form of a leadership tussle

- The defecting members were led by a former House of Assembly aspirant of the party, Olorogun Samson Okomitie

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ughelli South council area of Delta state has felt the brunt of the leadership crisis rocking the state chapter of the party.

Over 500 members of the party defected to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led by a former House of Assembly aspirant of the party, Olorogun Samson Okomitie.

According to Punch, Mr Okomitie said there was no future for the APC in the state during the defection in Ekakpamre community on Saturday, July 29.

He also said they had decided to dump the ruling party at the centre following the lingering leadership crisis rocking the state and council leadership of the party in the state.

Mr Okomitie also said: “We have decided to leave the All Progressive Congress because of the lingering leadership tussle rocking the party from wards, local government and state level without any attempt by the party hierarchy to settle the crises.

“For some of us, it has become evident that there is no party like PDP in Delta and it was also obvious that APC has a lot to do to compete with PDP in Delta considering extent the party had gone in the state with massive development.”

Stating the benefits of the PDP, he said that the development stride of the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa and the internal democracy within the state chapter of the PDP convinced him and his supporters to join them.

Ughelli South PDP Chairman, Mr Djegbe Oshetigho received the defectors with other party leaders from the area, and said the party was open and ready to receive members of the opposition parties ahead of the 2019 elections.
