UPDATED: Nigerian soldiers free oil workers, others kidnapped by Boko Haram in Borno state

- Some oil workers were kidnapped by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno state

- They were sent on an oil exploration mission in the state

- Some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force who accompanied the workers were feared dead

- The kidnapped oil workers have however regained their freedom

Seven persons kidnapped by Boko Haram on Tuesday, July 25, have regained their freedom.

NAIJ.com had reported that some oil explorers hired by NNPC were kidnapped by Boko Haram alongside their security aides.

In a report by Premium Times, seven of the abducted persons have been freed after a rescue-mission embarked upon by a joint force of soldiers and local security personnel.

Zanna Modu, the council chairman of Magumeri local government area of Borno state told newsmen that the rescue mission was effected on Wednesday July 26.

According to him, the troops rescued four Civilian-JTF members, two NNPC personnel and a staff of the University of Maiduguri.

Legit.ng had initially reported that many people are feared dead following an attack by Boko Haram terrorists on oil exploration workers around Jibi village situated between Magumeri and Gubio local government areas of Borno state.

Vanguard reports that the incident occurred on Tuesday, July 25 when the oil workers who were working for a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation were ambushed by the terrorists.

It was reported that some members of the Civilian Joint Task Force who accompanied them were also feared dead.

Top politicians in the region on the condition of anonymity confirmed the attack.

Meanwhile, four Boko Haram suspects including a father and son affiliated with the group were arrested by some soldiers in conjunction with vigilantes at Kurnari village and Nayinawa in Yobe state.

The army spokesperson, Brig-Gen Sani Usman, in a statement on Tuesday, July 25, stated that the insurgents were arrested on Monday, July 24, by troops of 233 Battalion, 27 task force brigade of Operation Lafiya Dole with the assistance of vigilantes who were on routine patrol.

General Usman gave the names of the suspects as Bukar Waziri, aged 25 years and Mammade Lawan, aged 20 years, from Buk, while the father and son, Muhammadu Damina, aged 40 years and Isah Muhammadu aged 15 years, were from Talala.
