Royal fathers make consultations over Obiano, Chidoka ahead of Anambra election

Some royal fathers in Anambra state have began consultations for the forthcoming election in the state, Legit.ng can authoritatively report.

It was also gathered that the politically embattled governor of the state Willie Obiano may be having more trouble than envisaged as some key traditional rulers in the state are now in intense consultations with political stakeholders.

Legit.ng gathered that the royal fathers have narrowed in on Obiano, a former minister of aviation Osita Chidoka and one other aspirant.

However, the former minister is seen many quarters as the key contestant with Obiano in the race for the seat of the governor in Anambra state.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Chidoka announced his intention to run as governorship aspirant under the platform of the United Progressive Party (UPP), a relatively unknown pan-Igbo party which has since gained rapid spread and spread and acceptance in the state after his motive was declared.

Also, sources close to the monarchs informed told Legit.ng that the royal fathers, though non-partisan personalities have been holding series of meetings and consultations with key political stakeholders in Anambra.

The sources said the consultations are aimed at streamlining their support lines as well as ensure a peaceful poll in the state on November 18 amidst the backdrop of the growing hostilities between the Biafra separatist groups and the governor.

The sources also said that some influential royal fathers including those from Obiano's Aguleri area held a crucial meeting on the issue on Wednesday, July 19.

Although details of the closed door meeting is not yet known, one of the sources confirmed reports that discussions are geared towards narrowing on the duo.

The source said the royal fathers considered the possible implications of the bitter tussle in Obiano’s party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) over hiccups he is currently facing in securing the party’s ticket as well as his issues with Biafra separatist groups.

The source said the royal fathers fear that these challenges might work against the governor on the November 18 election, hence the need to position an alternative.

“You know traditional rulers are non-partisan entities but they have the obligation to ensure that things work smoothly and peacefully," the source told Legit.ng.

"They are looking at a lot of issues relating to the elections; the agitations by separatist groups, those calling for no election in the state and a lot of other things. All they want is a peaceful process and they are making a lot of consultations.

The source said: "They (the royal fathers) are taking a lot of things into consideration including the fact that Chidoka is one aspirant that has shown high level preparedness and zeal for governance coupled with his experience in public service as well as extensive mobilization at the grassroots.”

The sources also explained that the royal fathers are yet to foreclose on the other aspirants although consideration for a public debate is in full gear.

Legit.ng earlier reported that 52 bishops and 144 priests alongside a representative of the acting president Yemi Osinbajo and former President Goodluck Jonathan attended the funeral of the mother of the governor of Anambra state.

The bishops including 26 from the Catholic Church, 16 from the Anglican Communion who were led by Primate Nicholas Okoh were all present at the funeral of 90-year old Christiana Obiano.
