NLC seeks collaborative supports on new minimum wage

- Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has sought the collaborative supports of Nigerians on new minimum wage

- NLC said if Nigerians do not rise up as workers to canvass for their right, by 2018, they will not be able to talk of a new national minimum wage

- The Congress also said that the N56,000 minimum wage implementation will help to reduce the suffering of workers

Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in its efforts to achieve the proposal for a new national minimum wage for workers sought for workers' collaborative support.

Mr James Esutace NLC Assistant General Secretary, made the congress’s proposal known in a conference that was held in Abuja on Thursday, July 20.

Legit.ng gathered that the conference was based on the “N56,000 Minimum Wage; Implication for the Nigerian Workers.

The symposium was convened by the Socialist Workers League. The league is an organisation of activists within the labour movement and civil society organisations, The Nation reports.

Esutace said:''If the N56,000 minimum wage is implemented, it will help to reduce the suffering of workers.

“There is no alternative to the N56,000 minimum wage which is long overdue for review, although it was underestimated yet Nigerians would enjoy it.

“This is why the organised labour, collectively put a demand on the Federal Government.

“If Nigerians do not rise up as workers to canvass for their right, by 2018, they will not be able to talk of a new national minimum wage.”

Esutace said that the National Assembly can remove the minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list any moment from now.

He also said that if the National Assembly achieved the aim, adding that the implication was that the country would not have a minimum wage.

“The national minimum wage is supposed to set a minimum benchmark. The philosophy behind the wage is to protect the unorganised and the vulnerable workers who do not have strong bargaining powers,’’ he said.

On his part, Mr Yahaya Abdullahi, the former chairman of NLC in the Federal Capital Territory, said what Nigerians are passing through is a result of economic recession.

Abdullahi also said that the N56,000 minimum wage proposal was not enough to provide the basic needs of the citizens.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike, the Rivers state governor said that Nigerians are not happy with the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC).

Wike on Friday, July 14, disclosed that Ayuba Wanna, president of NLC, paid him a courtesy call at government house, Port Harcourt.
