Arrested council chairman tells court where he was on day Melaye was allegedly attacked

- Dino Melaye, the senator representing Kogi West district, had alleged that those who wanted him dead were partly sponsored by Taufiq Isa

- Isa, a council administrator in Kogi state, was arraigned in court after an initial arrest and parade by the Nigeria Police Force

Arraigned in court for allegedly sponsoring an attack on Senator Dino Melaye recently, the administrator of Ijumu local government area of Kogi state, Alhaji Taufiq Isa, has revealed what transpired on the said date.

Melaye, who represents Kogi West, claimed he was attacked by gunmen in his house recently and accused the police of not responding to his call early enough.

Isa, who was in court on Thursday, July 13, told a Kogi state high court, sitting in Lokoja that on the day the alleged incident took place, he was at the hospital where his sick wife was on admission.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that Isa told the court presided over by Justice Arome Akogwu, that he does not know those that allegedly attacked the senator.

“I never sent anybody to attack Dino, my duty is to protect, I don’t know those that attacked him, I have never carried any arm to political rallies before.

“Dino and I have our differences, he wanted to nominate somebody as the administrator of Ijumu local government area.

“I was in the hospital looking after my wife who was sick and on admission when the said attack took place,” he said.

According to the report, this summation was part of a written statement tendered as exhibit by the prosecution at the resumed hearing of the case against the administrator and four others.

NAIJ.com learnt that the prosecution counsel, Lough Simon, had called Sergeant Abdul Aminu, the investigating police officer in the case, and that while under cross-examination, he said the statement was taken in the presence of the administrator.

The statement was accepted and marked an exhibit by Justice Akoju.

The case was adjourned to October 5, 2017 for further hearing.

NAIJ.com had reported that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it would halt the process of recalling Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west in the Senate.

Cable reports that a national commissioner of the commission Adedeji Soyebi, who disclosed this on Thursday July 13, said the decision was in line with a court ruling.
