- Joseph Atwill claims that the story of Jesus Christ is a hoax
- The Roman Empire fabricated it to pacify the poor, he claims
- He adds that it was a form of psychological warfare
A controversial US Biblical scholar has claimed that the entire story of Jesus Christ was a fabrication.
Writing in a blog in his website, Joseph Atwill claims that the Roman Empire used the story as a hoax designed to pacify the poor and control them.
He writes: "Christianity may be considered a religion, but it was actually developed and used as a system of mind control to produce slaves that believed God decreed their slavery.”
Atwill argues that restive Jewish sects in Palestine were waiting for their pre-ordained messianic "warrior," which implied that they were ready to fight against oppression.
The Roman Empire therefore, according to Atwill, fabricated the "peaceful messiah" theory to compete with the "warrior messiah" belief.
The scholar writes: "Instead of inspiring warfare, this Messiah urged turn-the-other-cheek pacifism and encouraged Jews to 'give onto Caesar' and pay their taxes to Rome."
