Kidnappers deserve death penalty – Governor Umahi

- The governor of Ebonyi state has said that the appropriate punishment for kidnappers is death sentence

- David Umahi said such punishment will deter other who intend to join the trade

- The governor said the kidnappers are the worse people on earth

The governor of Ebonyi state David Umahi has suggested an 'appropriate' punishment for kidnappers in Nigeria.

Umahi said all kidnappers across the country deserve death penalty.

Speaking in Abakaliki during an anti-corruption summit organized by the state government, Umahi said such punishment will deter other who intend too join the trade.

Addressing the enormity of the crimes perpetrated by Kidnappers, the governor said the Kidnappers are the worse people on earth.

Umahi said: “What these people do is worse than death, imagine kidnapping someone, blindfolding and chaining the person in one place for six months or more than that, it is worse than death and people who indulge in such deserve to be publicly executed to serve as deterrent to others.”

Also speaking at the summit themed: ‘Institutionalization of Good Governance for Sustainable Development’, the chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Ekpo Nta said good governance can never be achieved in a corrupt environment.

Nta said the non-existence or presence of weak regulatory system, corrupt officials and poorly executed physical infrastructure are major factors of of a corrupt system.

He said the commission has made it a duty to rely on anti-corruption campaigns through robust strategies.

The ICPC chairman said: “Corruption thrives where all these processes are prevalent and corrupt persons seize these opportunities.

“ICPC relies heavily on promoting anti-corruption through robust prevention strategies.

“The United Nations Convention Against Corruption, UNAC strongly recommends that most of our strategies be channelled into prevention processes. This is the practice adopted by countries that have successfully reduced corrupt processes.”

Legit.ng earlier that the notorious kidnapper Chukwudubem Onwuamadike popularly referred to as 'Evans the Kidnapper' warned all criminals still in the business of kidnapping.

Evans while speaking to journalists warned that police has advanced in their mode of operation far from what it used to be.

He said: "My advise to them is that as they are watching me standing here with policemen, they should stop everything about that, it doesn’t pay."

"The Nigeria police is not what it is used to be. They are far more advanced than they were. "If they could arrest me, there is no criminal they can’t arrest," the notorious kidnapper said.
