- The names of treasury looters will be published in due time, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami has said
- Several conditions will have to be met first before the names are published
- This follows pressure from Nigerians that names of looters and the amount of funds recovered be made public
On Wednesday, July 5, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami stated that the federal government will publish the names of treasury looters in due course.
The federal government has promised to disclose the identities of treasury looters but only at the appropriate time and “perhaps intermittently,” the justice minister Abubakar Malami said on Wednesday.
It comes after a Lagos high court order the government to “immediately release to Nigerians information about the names of high ranking public officials from whom public funds were recovered and the circumstances under which funds were recovered as well as the exact amount of funds recovered from each public official.”
According to AGF Malami, the list would be published if the following conditions are met:
“Let me place it on the record that we have Freedom of Information Act in place. And the government is fully aware of its responsibility," he said to reporters at Aso Rock.
He also said:“But we have to take into account and consideration, the fact that there are some factors that have to be considered as far as making these disclosures are concerned.
“There are matters that are sub judice in court. There are matters of reconciliation, compilations and other associated things.
“On the need and compliant basis, the Federal Government has been making public necessary statements.
“The disclosure will definitely be made, but it is contingent on reconciliation of associated considerations as they relate to sub judice principles; as they relate to concluding, reconciliation and confirmation of figures.
“So that has been done and the government will at the appropriate time make necessary disclosures perhaps intermittently against the background of the prevailing conditions relating to the dependency of certain things and associated things.”
The federal government has agreed to publish the names of looters of Nigeria’s treasury following a order issued by a Federal High court in Lagos.
NAIJ.com had earlier reported that the court ordered the President Muhammadu Buhari’s government to list names of suspected looters.
