Dino Melaye recall: 4 lawmakers who defeated constituents trying to remove them

Two weeks ago, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) notified the senator representing Kogi west, Dino Melaye, of the recall petition from his constituents.

The commission said it would issue a public notice stating the day, time, location and other details for the verification of signatures collected against him.

If the process to remove him is successful, Melaye would be the first legislator to be recalled. It is not however the first time.

Below is a list of other lawmakers who have defeated opportunities to recall them:

1. George Okoye

In the year 2000, George Okoye representing Njikoka-2 constituency of Anambra state was fingered to be recalled.

After a long legal battle between the lawmaker and INEC, the commission proceeded with the process. However, a low turnout of registered voters expected to verify the process led to failure.

2. Simon Lalong

Simon Lalong, when he was speaker of the Plateau state assembly representing the Shendam constituency, was targeted to be recalled.

Although he attempted to stop it when he filed a suit, alleging that the signatures collected for his recall were “not genuine and authentic,” the commission was later able to proceed with it.

However, once again, the required number of voters needed for the recall could not be completed.

3. Farouk Aliyu

When Farouk Aliyu was representing Birnin-Kudu/Buji federal constituency of Jigawa state the recall axe almost fell on him.

Once again, the required number of voters who turned up was not enough.

4. Umar Jibril

Umar Jibril, representing Lokoja/Kogi/Koton Karfe federal constituency, was due to be recalled. Some constituents had reportedly said they no longer wanted him as their representative.

However, in a shocking move, some constituents filed a counter-petition to INEC, alleging that their signatures were forged and as such they were not in support of the recall process as originally claimed.

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Senator Melaye in a series of tweets told his constituents not to be troubled over the recall process.

The senator urged his supporters to maintain peace, noting that the recall process will fail. He also vowed to continue to speak the truth or represent the voice of the voiceless in Kogi state.
