NBC Threatens To Axe Adaba FM, Radiovision

National Broadcasting Commission on Monday asked  ADABA FM and Ondo State Radiovision Corporation, to desist forthwith from unwholesome programming or face sanctions.

In a statement in Abuja on Monday, “NBC noted with grave concern, the unprofessional conduct of Continental Broadcasting Services Ltd, operators of ADABA FM, Akure and the Ondo State Radiovision Corporation, (OSRC) in the ongoing governorship campaigns in Ondo State’’.

According to the statement, NBC Director-General, Mr. Yomi Bolarinwa, said the two stations had breached the provisions of the National Broadcasting Commission Act and the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

The code states that “in adherence to the principles of pluralism, equal airtime shall be provided to all political parties or views, with particular regard to the amount of time and belt, during political campaign periods”.

The statement added, “However, in spite of several warnings and admonitions, one of the stations has continued to exhibit bias in political coverage and broadcast of political jingles in favour of a political party.

“The other station, which was also recently fined and has paid N400,000 for persistent violations of the provisions of the code, has allegedly continued and is being used for public incitement to violence.”

It also said the station’s continuous transmission of offensive content as a programme entitled ‘Elaloro’, “poses  a threat to law and order in Ondo State”.

The NBC said, “The commission wishes to put it on record, that it will not hesitate to suspend the broadcast licences of both stations, should they continue to breach the Code.”

The commission reminded broadcasting stations that they were only holding their licences for the people.

“Therefore, no station should be used, contrary to the provisions of the broadcasting laws, to promote personal or sectional interests at the expense of the people,” it said.
