Army did not train 1,000 soldiers to kill off a tribe - DHQ

- DHQ says the allegations were contained in an audio tape that has been making the rounds

- It says Nigerian soldiers are being trained in countries across the world to boost their capacity and Pakistan is one of those places

- Enenche says the training in Pakistan is a continuous one but is not aimed at killing Nigerians as claimed in the audio

The Defence Headquarters has denied allegations that the federal government has trained about 1000 soldiers to reportedly carry out genocide on a particular tribe in Nigeria.

According to a statement released by John Enenche, the Director Defence Information, the allegation which was made by a lone voice on an audio tape acquired by the military, was totally false.

The statement titled: ‘Re-disinformation about the military counter terrorism troops trained in Pakistan’ explained the reasons for the training.

"A voice clip in one of the major languages of the country has been in circulation on the social media with the summary as follows; “The disinformer claimed to be in Pakistan where he saw about 1000 Nigerian troops selected from a particular region in Nigeria graduating after their special training, with the directive to come back home to kill Nigerians of a particular tribe”.

“It is an incitive, untrue and unverified lie against the Armed Forces of Nigeria, targeted as discrediting the capacity building effort of the Military.

“Operationally, the Armed Forces of Nigeria is poised on building its capacity to meet the contemporary security challenges in the country. This is being done with other countries with similar security challenges of which Pakistan is one.

“Hence, the collaboration with Pakistan for the training of additional counter terrorist troops in addition to own local training efforts. It is instructive to clearly state that;

“a. The Nigerian troops that trained as a unit on counter terrorism in Pakistan were drawn from the Nigerian Army, Navy and Airforce, in line with the concept of the force generation.

“b. The personnel cut across all the religions as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution.

“c. All the geopolitical zones and major tribes in Nigeria are represented in the composition of the unit, as usual with the Nigerian Military.

“d. It is not an isolated training programme but an existing and continuous exercise.

“The Defence Headquarters therefore, reassures all Nigerians that, the Armed Forces of Nigeria is non sectional, regional or tribal. The military is ever ready to protect the lives and property of all in the Country. Hence, the ill motivated voice clip should be disregarded."

NAIJ.com had reported earlier this month that the Nigerian military special forces team completed a counter-terrorism training in Pakistan.

The Nigerian military had said it is tapping into the Pakistan army's experience in counter-terrorism.

The Asian country's Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Qamar Javed Bajwa, stressed the need for a collective response to terrorism.
