- A Nigerian pastor has cried out over alleged demand for bride price before marriage certificate
- The pastor, Mr. Benjamin Iyere, said when he approached the registry in Asaba, he was mandated to bring the bride price before he could be issued the marriage certificate
- He said he had reported the issue to ICPC but yet to receive any message from the anti-graft agency
A Redeemed Christian Church of God in Asaba, Delta state, Mr. Benjamin Iyere has alleged that some local government registries in Asaba have started demanding bride price list before they could issue marriage certificates.
In an article sent to NAIJ.com, Benjamin Iyere said that when he approached the registry department of Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta state to get his marriage certificate, the attending officer, one Mrs Ajeh S.K imposed an unofficial list of items on him to provide or preferably convert it to cash else she won't give me my marriage certificate.
He said after paying the mandatory N5000 certificate fee and tendered the teller and subsequently collected the receipt for the payment, Mrs. Ajeh still demanded that he should bring the bride price list before he could be issued the certificate.
He said: “I'm Benjamin Iyere, a pastor in the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Asaba. Please help me to publish the evils being perpetrated by some government officials in the registry department of Oshimili South Local Government Area of Delta state.
“After paying the mandatory N5000 and tendered the teller and subsequently collected the receipt for the payment, the attending officer (Mrs Ajeh S. K) imposed an unofficial list of items on me to provide or preferably convert it to cash else she won't give me my marriage certificate!
“As a true Nigerian who is determined to be part of those helping to eradicate corruption from our grassroots level, I refused to give the bribe money she requested for, this subsequently led to her refusal to give me the marriage certificate I have duly paid for.
“I have reported the issue to ICPC but they are treating it with levity, hence my decision to bring it to your notice.
The following are the unofficial items they requested for:
1 Bottle of Chamdor Wine
1 Carton of Can Malt (Guinness)
1 Carton of Can Minerals
1 Bottle of Groundnuts
2 packets of Cabin Biscuits.
“I have been married for about 15 years; I only needed the certificate, only to meet this kind of corrupt practices going on in this particular local government registry.”
