The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has given reasons why he ordered the sit-at-home protest for the remembrance of those who died during the Nigeria-Biafra civil war in 1967.

Kanu said the sit-at-home unlike other street protests carried out by the group was aimed at monitoring the level of participation of the people in the protest.

He also said the process was an easier approach than the regular street march.

Kanu speaking on the protest said: “We called for sit-at-home because it is far much easier to gauge response to the order than with a street march.

Kanu said the process was an easier approach than the regular street march.

"It is easier because when you say come out to the streets, it is practically assumed that everyone you see on the streets are predominantly IPOB members.”

"But if you say sit-at-home, you issue an order for people to comply with and there is the level of compliance that we have, that means that even the sentiment that you are echoing resonates among all the people,” Kanu said.

Queried whether the sit-at-home would be adopted as a method for IPOB protests, Kanu said: “No, no, no! We will still go out to the streets.

“For now we use it as a mini referendum to see to gauge the level of preparedness of our people.

“We are not saying it is better (the sit-at-home) but for the purpose for which it was adopted, it served that very need.

“For somebody to go out to the streets to protest is a right you have as a free being and no one can take it away from you. Not minding the very murderous nature of the zoo army.

"So, when the time comes for us to march on the streets of course we will march on the streets,” he concluded.

Legit.ng had reported how states in the South-East were like graveyards following the sit-at-home protest observed by the IPOB.

The group said the protest was aimed at honouring the victims of the 1967 Nigerian-civil war which lasted for 30 months.
