BREAKING: Arewa youths make next move after issuing 90 day quit notice to Igbos in north

- The group converged for another meeting following its quit notice to Igbos

- They said the south did not react when its youths gave a similar order

The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum has expressed disappointment over Governor Nasiru El-Rufai’s statement condemning them and ordering for their arrest.

Legit.ng had reported that a group named, the Coalition of Northern Youths (CNY) on Tuesday, June 6, issued a statement ordering Igbo people in the north to vacate Northern Nigeria within 3 months.

It was learnt that the group also urged northern people in the south-eastern part of the country to immediately start moving back to their various states.

The group threatened that from the 1st October, 2017, it will begin to prove to the whole world the north was no longer part of any federal union that should do with the Igbos.

In response, Governor El-Rufai on Wednesday, June 7 ordered the arrest and prosecution of the signatories of the quit notice.

“The Kaduna state government takes exception to the fact that the “northern youths” did their irresponsible press conference in Kaduna. This government has been consistent in taking action to punish hate speech and incitement. People who may feel unhappy about irresponsible comments or actions that have taken place in other states must know that two wrongs cannot make a right, and they cannot use our state to do or say things that threaten the peace."

Premium Times however reports that in spite of the state government’s order, the group called for another meeting to discuss the way forward.

Abdulaziz Suleiman who is the coordinator of the group described the reaction of El-Rufai as disappointing.

He said: “We are currently meeting to decide on how best to react.”

“Personally, I am disappointed with some of our leaders. These types of threats were issued against the Fulani recently and no governor from the South came out to condemn it.”

After the meeting, Suleiman insisted that they were not deterred by the arrest order insisting Igbos must leave their land since they did not believe in one Nigeria.

“Our declaration did not mention violence at all. The Igbo have consistently insisted that they don’t want to be in Nigeria, let them therefore, go back to their places.

“They don’t believe in Nigeria, so, we also don’t believe in them."

He also lashed out at Governor El-Rufai, accusing him of playing politics with the issue.

“Where was El Rufai when the Igbos gave the Fulani ultimatum to leave their areas?

“Where was he when over 500 northerners were killed in Ile Ife? These people just politicise everything.

“Because he wants to run for President, he chose to ignore his people and appease the Igbo? Goodluck to him.”
