As Nigerians continue to mourn the death of a former minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has revealed the last encounter he had with the late UN appointee.

Osotimehin reportedly died while watching television in his apartment in the United States.

Oba Ogunwusi who expressed shock at the demise of the professor and executive director of United Nation Population Fund (UNFPA), said Osotimehin was one of the greatest assets Africa will ever have.

Ooni Ogunwusi recalled how he met with the late Osotimehin in the US

In a condolence message by Moses Olafare, the director of media and public affairs at the palace, Ooni said he and his delegation were hosted by Osotimehin on June 13, 2016, at his United Nation Population office in New York.

He said he spoke with Osotimehin on the need for the United Nations to support his fight against infant mortality.

The monarch said: “His death is also painful because the palace and his office were already packaging some women empowerment programmes.

“This is in addition to what he had started with the Ooni to put an end to childbirth mortality cases not only in Yorubaland but the entire Africa.

“He had served the world, he had served our continent, he had served our country and he had served our race too remarkably and indelibly to be forgotten.

“May his gentle soul rest in the perfect peace of the almighty Olodumare.”

NAIJ.com earlier reported that Professor Babatunde Osotimehin died at 68.

Since his death, Nigerians have continued to mourn.

In his reaction to the incident, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said he was Acting President Yemi Osinbajo said he was “shocked and profoundly saddened.”

Osotimehin was born on Feb. 6, 1949 in Ogun State and he graduated from University of Ibadan. Osinbajo expressed his shock in a statement issued by the senior special assistant to the acting president on media and publicity, Laolu Akande, on Monday, June 5.
