Sultan of Sokoto faults NYSC for opening orientation camps during Ramadan fast

- The NYSC has been condemned for continuing to run its orientation camps despite the Ramadan fast

- Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI) said the decision of NYSC to admit new entrants into orientation camps during Ramadan would put Muslim faithful at a disadvantage

- The Islamic body also called on the Nigerian army to immediately postpone its planned recruitment exercise until after Ramadan

A foremost Islamic body in Nigeria, Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), has condemned the decision of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to continue running its orientation camps despite the Ramadan fast.

Legit.ng gathered that the body which is led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Abubakar Sa’ad, also called on the Nigerian army to immediately postpone its planned recruitment exercise until Muslims have concluded their fasting period for 2017.

The decision was reached by JNI as part of many resolutions, which included fervent prayers for ailing President Muhammadu Buhari, at its recently-concluded annual central council meeting in Kaduna.

The organisation said NYSC admitting new entrants into orientation camps and the Nigerian Army conducting recruitment exercise during Ramadan would put Muslim faithful, especially those observing fasting and prayers, at a disadvantage.

JNI called on the NYSC to honour a previous agreement entered by the two parties for camp activities to be placed on hold during Ramadan.

According to an earlier report by Legit.ng, the Da’Wah Coordination council of Nigeria, a coalition of Muslim groups, had threatened to force its members to boycott this year’s recruitment exercise by the Nigerian Army and the orientation programme of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

The groups said they would boycott the exercise should the Acting President Yemi Osinbajo fail to prevail on the organisations to shift the date of the two exercises.

The coalition also said that because the programmes coincided with the Muslims Ramadan fasting period it would ultimately affect their members interest.
