The Federal High Court sitting in Warri, Delta state has sentenced two siblings, a male and female to two years imprisonment each for Internet fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in a statement Monday, May 15, identified the duo as Chukwudi Ugwueke a.k.a James Scott and Sophia Ugwueke.
Spokesperson for the commission, Wilson Uwujaren, stated that the convicts were sentenced by Justice E. A .Obile of the Federal High Court, Warri but were given an option of N400,000 fine each, Premium Times reports.
The commission said the convicts were arrested by EFCC operatives at their residence in Sapele, Delta, in January based on intelligence on their illegal activities bordering on defrauding foreigners through internet scams.
They were first arraigned on Feb. 1 on a 13-count charge, but pleaded not guilty, according to the EFCC spokesman.
However, when the case came up for hearing on May 11, they pleaded guilty to an amended one-count charge of possession of fraudulent documents with intent to defraud one Lisa Marie Nors, an American.
After reviewing the evidence tendered by the prosecution counsel, M. T. Iko, Justice Obile found the duo guilty and convicted them accordingly, Uwujaren said.
Meanwhile, the EFCC has revealed that Governor Yari of Zamfara state built a hotel with $3m he stole from London-Paris Club loan refund
According to Sahara Reporters, the governor who is the chairman of the Governor’s Forum was said to have illegally diverted N19billion reportedly meant for "consultants" from the Paris club loan refund.
The hotel is said to be a 100-room property situated in Lekki area of Lagos. Also the anti-graft agency is said to be ready to take over the hotel when the court order is obtained.
Governor Yari also reportedly diverted N500 million from the Paris Club refund to pay off a loan, which he withdrew from the N19 billion Paris Club refund from the account of Nigeria Governors Forum.
