Lagos state government denies demolishing Ikorodu market at night
Lagos state government denies involvement in the demolition of Sabo Market, Ikorodu, which was demolished on the night of Thursday, May 4.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde, in a statement issued on Friday, May 5, said that the state government did not demolish the market and would not demolish any market or property in the state without following due process.
Legit.ng had reported earlier that the Sabo market, in Ikorodu local government, Lagos state, was demolished overnight on Thursday and traders arrived at their stall Thursday morning only to find the debris.
According to the statement presented by Ayorinde, the state government’s preliminary investigation revealed that the market was demolished by some private developers who connived with some local government officers and certain uniformed personnel who acted beyond their brief, Premium Times reports.

Ayorinde said the government had observed a pattern which security officials to carry out spurious orders without any proper notice being served to deny market women of the means of their livelihood.
He however said that the Lagos government would no longer tolerate this brazen act of illegality.
Ayorinde said, the government would henceforth beam its searchlight on the excesses of developers, local government officials and their cohorts in order to protect the interest of hard working traders.
The statement reads: “The current administration in the state is committed to the socio -economic empowerment of the people and has formulated policies and taken measures that would guarantee their economic well-being."

“It would therefore not fold its arms and watch desperate individuals or groups deny hard working people in the State their means of livelihood.”
Meanwhile, Officials of the Lagos state government on Wednesday, May 3, began demolition of shops located at the Ikeja New Garage along the popular Computer Village, Ikeja.
It was gathered that about 18 shops have been demolished as at the time of this report, with heavily armed police officers supervising the demolition.
