The dog, named ‘Teacher’ which died after attacking a bomber who was about detonating explosives in a crowd of wedding guests in Belbelo village of Bornu state, has been conferred a posthumous award for its sacrifice.
The award was presented by the national body of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association in Asaba, Delta state.
The owner of dog, Alhaji Mallum, received a cash award of N100,000 to buy another dog, with free veterinary treatment for the new dog.

The award was part of activities to mark the 2017 World Veterinary Day Celebration, themed “Antimicrobial Resistance - From Awareness to Action” which held in the state capital.
Presenting the award to Alhaji Mallum, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, said in view of the heroism displayed by the dog and the all-important role of dogs in maintaining security, the Nigeria police force would massively deploy sniffer dogs to Maiduguri and all states of the federation.
Idris who was represented by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, force and animal branch, Department of Operations FHQ, Abuja, Charles Ugomuoh, called on the Delta state government to establish a police kernel for sniffer dogs in the state.
