Group warns against violence as Delta conducts bye-election for vacant House of assembly seat

- A human rights group has warned youths and security personnel to shun violence in the bye election holding in Warri south constituency 1 on Wednesday

- The group warned that should any youth or security personnel be caught, such would be prosecuted

- It said the election should be conducted along with INEC provisions

A human rights group on Tuesday challenged politicians, voters and youths who will be involved in the April 26 bye-election in Warri south constituency 1 election to conduct the election in line with the principle put together by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The group, Committee for the Defense of Human Rights, also called on all security agents including the police, soldiers, members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps to maintain guiding the conduct of elections.

In a phone interview with Legit.ng, Chairman of the group, Prince Kehinde Taiga, said any security agent found involved in election or any other act that is not in line with the process laid down by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be prosecuted.

He said all constituency members, including youths should shun ballot box snatching, dumping of ballot boxes with ready filled ballot papers and intimidating people opposed to their candidates at the election which is billed to hold on Wednesday, April 26, 2017.

Police, soldiers and members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps should not allow themselves to be used by politicians. They should not be swayed by money to flout election guidelines which they know.

“They should not allow money turn their minds away. We will not fail to take them to court if they are caught working against INEC guidelines. Police and other security personnel are meant to protect and not act as obstacles to the good conduct of elections.

“We advise the people to elect people who will represent them in the house of assembly and bring democracy to them. Not all people going for political positions have the people in mind. Many are going there to amass wealth for themselves,” Prince Taiga said.

The election is coming following the death of Omawumi Udoh, who died on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at a United Kingdom hospital at the age of 56.

She occupied the constituency seat in the state house of assembly for the 4th term when death took her away.

The campaign for the seat in the house of assembly has been battle between members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
