SGF giving Buhari's administration a bad name – Minister

- The suspension of Babachir David Lawal is still a trending topic in Nigeria

- The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) has been a controversial figure since he assumed office

- Some officials of the present administration are not comfortable with his presence in Aso Rock

A report by The Punch indicates that some government officials are happy with the suspension of the SGF.

A minister, who spoke to the newspaper on the condition of anonymity, said the decision to suspend Lawal was part of the consensus reached at a reconciliatory meeting held by the presidency and the leadership of the Senate.

Legit.ng gathered that the frosty relationship between the presidency and the Senate informed the decision of senators to suspend the screening of President Muhammadu Buhari’s nominees for the positions of Resident Electoral Commissioners.

The minister was quoted as saying: “The president was advised to suspend the SGF because his issue was already giving the government a bad name.

“Apart from the fact that he is not known as a major part in the APC, he is also being seen as a cog in the wheel of the government anti-corruption crusade.

“Already, his issue has also polarised the party and the presidency. So, in order to give a bite to the anti-corruption war, he needs to be suspended.”

Meanwhile, the senator representing Kebbi Central Senatorial district, Senator Adamu Aliero has said that the suspension of the SGF would strengthen executive and legislative relationship.

Aliero, a former governor of Kebbi state explained that the report of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on humanitarian crises in the North East which indicted the SGF was detailed.

Similarly, Shehu Sani, the senator heading the committee that blew the lid of the contract frauds at the Presidential Initiative for the North East which indicted the SGF, has commended President Buhari for the move.

“It is commendable that the president has taken the senate committee report and recommendations seriously,” Senator Sani (APC-Kaduna) told journalists.

In a related development, former presidential aide, Pastor Reno Omokri, has said that President Buhari's fight against corruption will remain to him a charade, until Babachir Lawal is charged to court.

Omkori who had earlier said that Buhari would have to sack his 13 SANs and show his certificate, says the president cannot continue to wine and dine with corrupt officials.
