Former majority leader Ali Ndume was suspended by the Senate on Wednesday, March 29, for bringing unproven allegations against his colleagues Senator Dino Melaye and Senate president Bukola Saraki.
The Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges which probed the allegations of certificate forgery against Melaye and controversial bulletproof Range Rover against Saraki said it was Ndume who dragged Saraki's name into the matter of the seized bulletproof Range Rover based on a false report he acquired from social media.
His suspension which begins with immediate effect will last for six months.
NAIJ.com brings you four senators who supported Ndume’s suspension during plenary today.
1. Senator Barau Jibrin
After the ethics committee submitted its report which recommended that Ndume should be suspended, Jibrin who represents Kano North said: "When we see anything against another Senator, we must bring it to the floor of the Senate before making hurtful statement."
2. Senator Yusuf Abubakar
The senator representing Taraba Central said Saraki, Melaye and the Senate have been wronged as an institution and asked that Ndume apologise to them. He said Ndume relied on reports in the papers.
“As a first offender, Ndume should be suspended from Committee activities and not outright suspension,” he added.
3. Senator Mathew Uroghide
The ethics committee had recommended that Ndume’s suspension should last for 191 Legislative days. But, Uroghide who represents Edo South senatorial district pleaded with the Senate to reduce it to six months.
4. Deputy Senate president Ike Ekweremadu
According to him, lessons had been learnt. He asked his colleagues to always investigate matters first before drawing conclusions in future.
After putting the question before senators for the reduction of Ndume’s suspension, it was reduced to six months.
Reacting to Ndume's suspension, Lauretta Onochie, special assistant on new media to President Buhari, said the senators were behaving like kids whose snack was seized.
Meanwhile, former Minister of Education and BringBackOurGirls lead convener, Oby Ezekwesili, said that both the Nigerian Senate and House of Representatives have done nothing for citizens except of course to pay themselves fat allowances and engage in various scandals and produce comedies.
