Okonkwo, along with others on the run, were alleged to have faked Amasin lubricant, Engen Super 200 of Amasco International Nigeria Limited.

The accused was arraigned on two counts of conspiracy and unlawful adulteration and processing of Amasin oil.

The charge sheet reads, “That you, Mr. Luke Okonkwo, 38, male and others at large, on June 15, 2012 at about 2pm, at Zone A, Block 1, Shop 5, Aspanda Trade Fair within the jurisdiction of the court did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit adulteration of lubricant oil and thereby committed an offence pursuant to Miscellaneous Offences Act M17 laws of the federation 2004.

“That at the same time and place within the jurisdiction of the honourable court did without lawful authority adulterate and process Amasin lubricant oil and therefore committed an offence pursuant to Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17 Laws of the Federation.”

In the first arraignment, the case was adjourned until December 17 pending the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution.

However, Friday, November 23, was slated for hearing of the bail application filed by the defendant’s lawyer, Mr. Richard Okonkwo.

Before the ruling on the application for bail by Magistrate A.F. Botoku, the defendant’s lawyer had urged the court to grant his client bail, saying he was a credible person.

But the police prosecutor, Mr. Moruf Animashaun, initially objected to the bail on the grounds that he had yet to see the bail application.

The magistrate explained to him that granting the accused bail did not imply that he (prosecutor) could not go ahead with the case.

Botoku, therefore, granted the accused bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

She said the adjourned date of December 17, 2012, still stood.
