Justice Nyako blasts security agencies for preventing journalists from Kanu's trial

Overzealous security men had on Wednesday, March 1 prevented journalists including Legit.ng reporters from gaining access into the court premises.

The counsel representing Nnamdi Kanu, Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor brought the attention of the matter to Justice Nyako.

He lamented the continuous intimidation and suppression of journalists who are present to cover the court proceedings of the trial.

He queried why despite a court ruling on January 3 permitting journalists to cover the court proceedings, the security agents have continued with their high handed approach by refusing entrance to the journalists and confiscating media equipment in the process.

His words: "My lord, on January 3, 2017, you gave an order that journalists should be allowed inside the court, but the DSS and other security agents stopped them.''

The prosecuting counsel, S. I Labaran objected and told the court that the security officials are merely "carrying out their duties".

Justice Nyako however informed both counsels that her previous rulings on easy passage of journalists’ remains unchanged, and noted that she is monitoring the actions of the security agents and will intervene at the appropriate time.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, February 28, former CBN governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo and renowned economist, Dr Pat Utomi led a delegation of Igbo leaders to Kuje prison to meet with Kanu.

The delegation thereafter addressed a press conference where they demanded for the release of Kanu and three others.
