Editor’s note: In any recruitment process, both the employees and employers usually want trust to be the key factor in engaging either at entry or managerial level. However, in this piece, a concerned Nigerian explains how he and other security contract staff employed by the NNPC were being made to undergo difficulties due to the company’s inability to pay their outstanding salaries and wages.

“My able Honourable Senate President, permit me to start this letter with the words of our Senators, especially your words:"Mr. President, the feedback we get from the visits to our various constituencies is that there is hardship in the land. We can see it and we can feel it. This situation, therefore, commands all of us as government to a greater sense of urgency.

“We cannot work magic, but we must continue to work the clock. Our people must see that the singular pre- occupation of government is the search for solution to the current economic hardship; and the commitment to ease their burden. They don’t want to know what political parties we belong, what language we speak or how we worship God.

“They have trusted their fates into our hands, and they need us now more than ever, to justify the trust that they have reposed on us. The people of Nigeria will pardon us if we do some things wrong. But they will not forgive us if we do nothing.

"Senate President Saraki "I firmly believe that one of the primary responsibilities of government is to implement economic policies that lift millions of our citizens out of poverty, and to use the resources at its disposal to create safety nets for the poor and vulnerable in our society. There should be a minimum standard, below which no Nigerian should live." - Senator Ashafa

We would like to appreciate the Senate copiously for championing the 'Intellectual' Revolution we need in the upper House of the National Assembly and Nigeria’s political echelon.

The labourer is worthy of his wages but reverse is the case for us at NNPC Area Depot Mossimi Ogun State, NNPC Satellite Depot Ejigbo, Lagos, NNPC Corporate Office V/I Lagos. We are contract security staff working at NNPC under the management of Sears Security Limited which is a firm owned by Mr Mathew, a pensioner with NNPC.

I personally have worked at NNPC under the management of Sears for many years, and it's customary for our salary to be delayed for over six months before being paid. In terms of academy qualifications, the least among us is an OND holder while majority of us working as security here at NNPC are graduates with first class, professional certificates of various kinds, yet we can't afford to feed ourselves due to the delay of our salaries.

We are writing to appeal to the Senate to please look into this issue of contract staff as a matter of urgency; we have children and family to cater for, children’s school fees and house rent to pay, medical and PHCN bills to take care of.

We loss a colleague at NNPC Satellite Depot Ejigbo in late January this year, if the deceased were being paid monthly, he would have taken proper care of himself. Over 15 security officers were sacked at NNPC corporate office V/I Lagos due to a sick strike they embark on because they are owned for 9 Months of working without salary.

Time without numbers we are being reminded by the Managing Director of the firm that there's no job outside and whoever is tired of the job can off his or her uniform and work away, this is nothing else but enslavement.

We believe in the positive change of the Federal Government of our Country Nigeria that very soon we will be freed from poverty and corruption, we therefore appeal to you all to intensify and review the terms and conditions of the contract, for we know that our former President Olusegun Obasanjo introduced this Contract Security to NNPC which has caused more damage to NNPC, it could be recalled that security officers at Satellite Depot Ejigbo conspired to steal fuel, this was as a result of the delay in payment of salaries.
