UPDATE: Unknown gunmen kill 2, abduct 2 foreigners in Kaduna

Two people were killed and two others abducted by unknown gunmen in the northern part of Nigeria.

According to Sahara Reporters, the attack occurred on the Kaduna-Abuja Road on Wednesday, February 22.

The gunmen carried out the attack in Governor Nasir El-Rufai's Kaduna state.

A local hunter and another man were killed and two German nationals were abducted by the gunmen on the border of Kaduna and Federal Capital Territory.

SaharaReporters quoted a senior diplomat as saying on telephone that the gunmen struck around around Jere area of Kagarko local government area in Kaduna State and Bwari council of the Federal Capital Territory.

Nigerian Tribune reports that the Germans taken hostage were archaeologist Prof. Peter Breunij and his associate, Johannes Buringer, who working at a Nok culture digging site.

The newspaper quoted an eyewitness as saying the incident happened when the archaeological team resumed for work at a site at Jenjela village and five gun men appeared from the bush and ordered them to lie down.

The eyewitness said: “They started coming one by one, the first two with machetes then the others with heavy guns. There were many people at the site who were working so they ordered us to face down and shot into the air in order to scare people.

“It was at that point that they asked the professor and his associate to follow them, they led them to the other side of the road, made them to cross and began to lead them further into the bush.

“A hunter whom they had snatched a phone from asked us to go after the men, but only one of us obliged. The two men crossed the road chasing after the gun men. When the gunmen realised that they were being followed, they turned around and opened fire, killing the hunter and the other man.”

The hunter and other man who were killed lost their lives while trailing the gunmen after the abduction but were found out by the attackers who opened fire on them.

The abductors were said to be heading towards Abuja when they suddenly veered off back to an unknown location in Kaduna State for the fear of being trailed.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has deployed the Police Special Forces to end the renewed clashes in Southern Kaduna.

The Commissioner of Police in Kaduna State, Aghole Abeh said in Kaduna on Wednesday, February 22, that the IG had also ordered the Police Air Wing to commence aerial surveillance of the area.
