Just in: Senate reads Buhari’s letter, receives Osinbajo’s confirmation letter for Onnoghen

Acting president Prof. Yemi Osinbajo has sent confirmation letter of acting chief justice of Nigeria Justice Walter Onnoghen to the Senate.

The Senate President Bukola Saraki read both letters on the floor of the upper house of legislator on Tuesday, February 21.

In the letter, Osinbajo requested that the Senate move ahead with screening and consequent confirmation of Onnoghen as the country’s substantive chief justice.

Saraki also read two other letters. One is President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter dated Sunday, February 5 and requesting extension of his leave which was supposed to end that day.

The third letter Saraki read was the official confirmation of the defection of Senator Andy Uba from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in line with House rules.

The Senate however adjourned plenary early because of the death of House of Representatives member Bello Sani (APC, Katsina) last week.

As customary in the Nigerian legislature, the National Assembly suspended plenary in honour of the late lawmaker who died of a brief illness.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed that he needs a longer time to rest, thus putting paid to speculations and claims by top government officials that he is actually fit and healthy.

The president said this on Tuesday, February 21, 2017 saying the rest is deserved following the results from the series of medical tests he carried out in the United Kingdom where he is on vacation.
