Tribalism and religious intolerance is killing Nigeria - Gospel Singer

- A gospel singer, Abioro Seyitan has blamed tribalism and religion as the two instruments of destruction in Nigeria

- Seyitan said political leaders apply these two sentiments to cause dispute among Nigerians

A Nigerian gospel singer, Abioro Seyitan has fingered tribalism and religion intolerance as the major problem in Nigeria.

Seyitan who spoke in Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria most Nigerian leaders used religion and ethnic group to set Nigerians against each other.

He said: “They have fuelled this tribal and religious intolerance over the years just to achieve their selfish interests.

“How can someone have to be from one tribe or religion before he or she can attain certain position or access some privileges?

“Whether Muslims or Christians, it is high time we realised that we have been used to fight ourselves for nothing.

“I strongly believe that Nigerians can live together peacefully and appreciate one another, no matter their religion or tribe.”

Seyitan advised Nigerian politicians and citizens to fear God and love each other accordingly.

He said: “When we decide to love God and neighbours, vices like corruption, tribalism and oppression will be a thing of the past.

“All these sentimental attachment to things like ‘my religion, my tribe and political party first ‘will not be necessary.”

Meanwhile, former United States of America (USA) ambassador to Nigeria, Mr John Campbell writes on the violence and impunity that has characterised the Nigerian society for decades.

Writing on the website of the Council of Foreign Relations, Campbell who is a an expert in African affairs quoted observers who have long tied Nigeria’s very high levels of ethnic and religious violence to impunity.

He reiterated that there is a history of the security services and the judiciary failing to find and punish the perpetrators of violence in Nigeria, adding that this leads to a cycle of revenge.
