The Nigerian Senate today, February 13, is holding the first-of-its-kind public hearing on the 2017 Appropriation Bill submitted to the legislature by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The 2017 budget hearing will take place from today to Wednesday, February 15 .

According to a statement by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the chairman, Senate committee on media and public affairs, the public hearing is aimed at allowing stakeholders and members of the public to make contributions to the proposed legislation before passage by the National Assembly.

Dr Bukola Saraki in his opening remarks to declare open the event, noted that the country is at a critical stage in its national development and thus welcomed the idea of the budget hearing.

Over the past week, the Senate suspended regular plenary sessions in order to give all committees an opportunity to conduct adequate oversight and for ministries, departments and agencies of the federal government to defend the allocations included in the estimates submitted to the legislature by President Buhari.

President Buhari presented the 2017 appropriation bill to a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, December 14 2016.

The budget which is a N7.298 trillion proposal will become effective immediately the Assembly approves and passes it back to the president for assent.

The N7.298tn proposed in the budget is a 20.4% increase over the 2016 estimate and the president's breakdown reveals why.
