The visit has sparked rumours that the Igbo group may have endorsed Atiku for the presidential elections in 2019.

The former vice president has never hidden his intention to become Nigeria's number one citizen after serving as the country's vice president for eight years (1999-2007).

Already, two Igbo groups have accused Chief Nwodo and his team of trading off the 2019 Igbo presidency to Atiku during the visit.

"We are shocked and disappointed because it is on record that ever since Nwodo was elected, he has not visited any political or religious leader in Igbo land; neither has he paid any visit to elders statesmen in this part of the country," one of the groups said in a statement.

The groups described the visit as petty, patronizing and against the overall interest of Ndigbo.

A follower of Atiku on micro-blogging site, Twitter, Emeka Onuoha reacted to the visit by writing: ''I commend Chief Nnia Nwodo for visiting his excellency. Now let the talks begin.''

Another commenter, Nate Otaba wrote: ''A detribalized leader.. An example of what Nigerians need now.''

On his part, Umameh Ocholi wrote: ''Let's gooo...Atiku 2019, Nigerians are hungry!''
