Group calls for immediate arrest of Kashamu
A human rights group, the CPPM, has said Kashamu’s public outburst was provocative and unbecoming of a senator of the federal republic.

A human rights group, the Committee for the Protection of Peoples Mandate (CPPM), has condemned threats by Senator Buruji Kashamu over his indictment for drug-related offences by the US appeal court and the order for his extradition to face trial.

Kashamu had on Sunday, January 29, threatened that about three, four or five people will have to die before he could be extradited to the US to face trial over drug related charges.

He also vowed that any attempt to “abduct” him by the US government would be met with violence; adding that he planned to engage the services of members of the Oodua Peoples Congress for protection.

Reacting to the senator’s statement, the CPPM called on security agencies to arrest Buruji Kashamu for threatening public peace, the Punch reports.

The group in a statement on Monday, January 30, issued by its executive chairman, Nelson Ekujumi, described the statement credited to the senator as the inciting, irresponsible, barbaric, unparliamentary.

The group pointed out that Kashamu’s public outburst was provocative and unbecoming of a senator of the federal republic.

It said the senator’s action was an attempt to intimidate the law enforcement agencies from discharging their constitutional duties, as well as an assault on the Nigerian constitution.

"If Senator Buruji Kashamu, who is a member of our highest lawmaking institution, the Senate, feels strongly about a judgment of the court, whether in Nigeria or in any part of the world, one would have expected him, as a custodian of the legitimate mandate of the Nigerian people, to be civil, responsible and sensitive to explore civilised means of seeking redress, rather than threatening public peace by threats of violence."

The group called on the leadership of the Senate to immediately summon Senator Buruji Kashamu to appear before the appropriate committee for acts unbecoming of a senator, and for bringing the image of the National Assembly into disrepute.

We equally call for his immediate arrest," it said.

Meanwhile, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has proclaimed his decision to push for the arrest of Senator Buruji Kashamu.

The agency said it has become “embolden and strengthened” by the latest ruling of a United States court that the senator should be extradited to the United States to face drug related charges.

A US court on Friday, January 27, gave the ruling, while rejecting an appeal by the senator that the court should prevent his abduction by US authorities to face drug trafficking charges.

Kashamu representing Ogun east constituency was alleged to have been the ring-leader of a ’90s drug cartel in Chicago, US.

The NDLEA also stated that it would ensure that orders stopping the arrest of the senator were vacated in a bid to pave the way for his extradition.

It further noted that it would not undermine the extradition agreement that Nigeria had with the US with respect to the case involving Kashamu, adding that the federal lawmaker must go to the US and clear his name.
