Ekiti remands two herdsmen for destroying N850,000 farmland

- Two herdsmen are presently in trouble in Ekiti state for possessing firearms and destroying farmland valued at N850,000

- The herdsmen’s actions violated the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing Law in Ekiti state

- Their case was adjourned till Friday, January 27 while the accused have been remanded in prison

Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose made the law under which the two herdsmen are being tried for destroying the farmland.

For violating the Prohibition of Cattle and Other Ruminants Grazing Law in Ekiti state, two herdsmen are presently cooling their heels in detention in the state according to a report by The Nation.

The two herdsmen identified as Momodu Rebo (19) and Isiaka Idris (22) were yesterday remanded in prison custody by an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for destroying a farmland at Apoto Farm Settlement in Eporo, Emure Local Government Area.

Samson Osobu, the police prosecutor told the court that the offence was committed on Wednesday, January 11 by the accused and others at large while in possession of guns and other weapons.

According to the prosecutor, the accused unlawfully grazed their cattle on farmland not designated as ranches.

The said farmland belongs to Akinwale Bisi, Agbelegbe Dare and Paul Salami.

Crops damaged are valued at about N850,000.

The pleas of the accused persons were however not taken as their counsel Ademola Okeya asked for adjournment while waiting for advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

The case was adjourned till January 27 by Chief Magistrate Idowu Ayenimo and the accused persons remanded in prison pending the outcome of the advice from DPP

Meanwhile, a senior civil servant with Ekiti state government Mr. Tope Afolayan has hanged himself allegedly over unpaid salaries that made him unable to pay his huge debt.

Before his death, Afolayan, a native of Oye-Ekiti, worked in the office of the state accountant-general as a level 10 officer.
