Ghana election: President Mahama congratulates president-elect Akufo-Addo

John Dramani Mahama, the outgoing president of Ghana, has called Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), to congratulate him on his victory in the 2016 presidential election.

Mr Mahama has also pledged to work with Mr Akufo-Addo in the national interest.

Yen.com.gh has reported that Mr Akufo-Addo was declared the president-elect of Ghana during a press conference on Friday, December 9.

The future president, who was contesting his third straight presidential election, secured 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.85%, to beat Mahama, who managed 4,713,277 votes, which represented 44.40%.

Following announcement of election results hundreds of thousands of NPP supporters immediately took to the streets in wild jubilation.
