Buhari holds talks with Boko Haram to free more hostages – Presidency

Presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina revealed that the Muhammadu Buhari-led government is currently holding talks with members of the deadly Boko Haram group for the release of more hostages.

Adesina has noted that the Nigerian authorities would henceforth treat sponsors of the sect as terrorists the moment they are identified as such.

He was speaking in Lagos, during an interview with media men after his presentation at a seminar organised by the Directorate of Army Public Relations (DAPR).

Buhari's media aide said that government is determined to tackling issues surrounding militancy and insurgency, underlying that there is an ongoing dialogue between government for the release of more Boko Haram hostages.

"You know that this is a government that has the capacity to tackle issues. If it knows those sponsors, you can be sure it would address it. Confirmed sponsors of Boko Haram would be treated like Boko Haram insurgents,” he said.

Mr Adesina who spoke on the challenges and expectations of the media in Nigerian army operations noted the need for synergy between the military and journalists.

According to him, there is no way the military would escape the scrutiny of the media, continuing that they (the army) must understand this.

Recently, the Boko Haram terrorists freed 21 Chibok schoolgirl after more than two years of captivity.

The release was the result of what officials described as more than a year of tense negotiations with one of the continent’s most brutal militant groups. Nigeria said it was the first step toward freeing all the girls, who were abducted by Boko Haram fighters from their boarding school shortly before final exams in April 2014.
