June 12: Anenih to open up on his role

The former chairman, Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih has broken his silence of over two decades in his role in the annulment of the 1993 presidential election.

Anenih, 83, was the national chairman of the then Social Democratic Party (SDP), which was the party of Late Chief M.K.O Abiola who emerged winner of the electoral contest.

Abiola was denied his mandate by the then military government headed by General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd) and later died in detention after he was thrown in jail by military dictator, Late General Sani Abacha.
Chief Tony Anenih, has opened up on his role in the political logjam in a new book to be launched in Abuja tomorrow, November 25.
Anenih, popularly called 'Mr Fix it' by his admirers, had refrained from making comments on the 1993 events even when pressed to do so by the media.
The planning committee for the book launch told in a statement to journalists said the political class should “update itself on the story of intrigues at the highest level, as told by one of the unique players.
“Anenih has opened up on how the bid by the political class to reclaim the now infamous June 12 mandate was thwarted by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha.”
“In his autobiography, titled, “My Life and Nigerian Politics”, billed for public presentation at the International Conference Centre in Abuja on Saturday (tomorrow), Anenih’s narrative captures the various political events and developments that culminated in how Abiola won the presidential election, how the outcome of the election was annulled midway by the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida and how the Interim National Government (ING), set up with Chief Ernest Shonekan as head to conduct another presidential election, was overthrown by Abacha.”

Meanwhile, state governors in the South-west region of Nigeria have resolved to forge a common front in order to stave off external influences capable of stifling the region’s economic and social interests.
Political leaders from the region have always been accused of abandoning ship when the going gets tough, hence the governors resolve to forge a common front in the region's quest for economic and social development.
