Why Nigerians must take Obasanjo seriously - former minister

- Former President Olusegun Obasanjo recently slammed the administration of Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly

- Obasanjo had since being receiving serious bashing from some politicians and members of the House of Representatives who consider him as also corrupt

- A former minister, Yomi Edun, who served under Obasanjo, has reacted to the comment that is already heating up the political space

While members of the House of Representatives have heavily criticised Chief Olusegun Obasanjo over his verbal attack on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Assembly, Chief Yomi Edun, a former minister, has said the former president should be taken seriously.

Edun spoke in a report by The Point stressing that the former president would not just speak because he wants to but that he says things he knows.

Obasanjo recently slammed the administration of Buhari asking the latter to concentrate on why he was elected and stop complaining. He also accused the National Assembly of gross corruption and in reaction, they latter called him grandfather of corruption.

Edun, who said Obasanjo's comment should be taken in good faith and in the interest of Nigeria, added: “I served with Obasanjo as the minister for special duties between 1999 and 2003.

“The former president is highly respected, both nationally and internationally. He is a man of vast experience and he is also conscious of this country.

He loves Nigeria very dearly, that I know for sure. So whatever advice Obasanjo gave to President Buhari should be taken seriously with the good intention in which it was intended.

“I don’t believe there is any feud between Obasanjo and President Buhari because I know that Buhari is a president that came in with a lot of good will and good intention and people like Obasanjo would not normally speak unless he feels there is a need to speak out.

"So, whatever Obasanjo said should be taken seriously and with good intention.”

The report also quoted a former senator, Yinka Omilani, as warning Nigerians not to take Obasanjo's comments as a sign of a frosty relationship with Buhari.

Omilani said he was at the forum where Obasanjo spoke and that he only tried to contribute to strengthening the nation’s democracy.

“I was there yesterday when Obasanjo made the comment. He did make the comment not to lash on the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

"It is natural for people to make comments about any ongoing administration and I believe that the essence of this is for us to achieve the kind of democracy that we are all clamouring for in the country," he said.
