For allegedly eyeing the seat of seat of the governor in his state, the speaker of the Imo state House of Assembly, Acho Ihim, is to be impeached.
His colleagues are currently calling for his resignation and threatening to impeach him if he does not honourable resign.
Ihim is the current president of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Africa Region.
Daily Sun reports that some aggrieved lawmakers have accused the speaker of making the Assembly an extension of the government house because of his alleged gubernatorial ambition.
After a meeting at the home of a top politician in the state, the lawmakers have now vowed to remove the speaker if he failed to resign.
The report quoted one of the lawmakers as saying: "We have never had it so bad in this state where legislators have lost so much respect among the populace because of the ambition of the speaker who has turned himself as an aide of the governor.
"Because of his ambition to become governor in 2019, he is undermining the powers of the legislature to the extent that allowances due to members of the House are not paid to them.
“We have, therefore, resolved to ask the speaker to resign honourably or we will be forced to remove him in accordance with the constitution for incompetence.”
The lawmaker who was not named, said his colleagues are already gathering the two-third majority they need to carry out the impeachment. He claimed that even though they were not against his ambition, they were not happy with the way he is going about it.
It was learnt that his ambition has pitched him against the executive arm of the state government.
However, in his reaction, the spokesman to the speaker, Ben Ilochuonwu, dismissed the impeachment plot against his boss.
He also denied that the speaker had any ambition to succeed Governor Rochas Okorocha in 2019 adding that the speaker and his colleagues have enjoyed cordial relationship over time.
Henry Uzoma Ezediaro, another lawmaker and ally of the speaker, further maintained that there was not plot against the leadership of the House.

According to him, the speaker has always ensured that members got their legitimate entitlements. He said the governorship ambition was a hoax.
“There is no problem in the House and there is no division.
"It is not true that members want to impeach the speaker because we have been getting our legitimate entitlements as at when due. So, it is nothing but a mere rumour.
“Besides, there is nothing wrong if the speaker is nursing the ambition to be governor but to say that some members of the House are plotting to impeach him on that basis is totally false, as the speaker has never told anyone, to the best of my knowledge, that he wants to contest for the governorship of the state in 2019," he was quoted as saying.
