Abia PDP treasurer slumps, dies in tennis court

Chief Steve Omeoga, the Abia state treasurer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is dead, The Punch reports.

Chief Don Ubani, the state PDP publicity secretary, confirmed his death on Thursday, November 17.

He said: “It is unfortunate, he is dead.”

According to the report, Omeoga slumped at a popular sport club, in Umuahia, the state capital, shortly after playing a lawn tennis game with a club member on Wednesday evening, November 16.

It was gathered that Omeoga, who appeared hale and hearty, had ordered about two cartons of beer for members present at the club, shortly before his death.

This was disclosed by a member of the sports club, who pleaded anonymity.

The source said after playing the game successfully, Omeoga who did not appear exhausted, sat on the court.

He said: “Initially members thought he was relaxing, only to observe with shock, that the man had slumped and was gradually losing consciousness.

“Efforts were made by club members to resuscitate him, before rushing him to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia where the doctors battled fruitlessly to save his life. We lost him.”

Chief Omeoga's death comes just weeks after another PDP member died in a tragic motor accident in Abia.

According to a press release signed by Don Ubani, the Abia state PDP publicity secretary, one of the party's female local government chairmanship aspirant, Hon. Patience Monday Oroni died in a fatal accident on Tuesday, October 11, shortly after submitting her nomination form to the party.
