FMC Doctors Ignore Pleas, Continue Strike

Association of Resident Doctors of the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, Ondo State, on Thursday vowed to continue its strike.

The association, among other things, is demanding the recruitment of more medical personnel by the hospital management.

The ARD, in a statement jointly signed by its President, Dr. John Ajuonu, and General Secretary, Dr. O.A Sotiloye, maintained that the strike would continue until the management agrees to employ more doctors in order to alleviate the sufferings of patients and doctors.

The association wondered why the FMC Owo would have just 143 doctors, whereas the one at Ido in Ekiti State, which is smaller, boasts about 450 doctors.

The statement said, “Since 2010, the ARD FMC Owo has made several appeals to the management to replace the doctors that had left. This was because the number of clients seeking treatment in the hospital is consistently increasing, hence having a serious impact on the doctors.”

It said the strike resulted from the decision of the management to employ just 10 doctors contrary to the agreement reached between the two parties in June after a series of negotiations since 2010 that all the vacant positions would be filled.

The doctors said, “We recognise the difficulties being faced by our clients and the community as a whole and we regret any inconvenience occasioned by this action.”

But the Joint Action Committee, Senior Staff Association of Universities and the Medical and Health Workers Union of the centre dissociated themselves from the strike.

The unions, in a statement, also described the strike as “illegal and unnecessary”.

They said, “The reasons put forward by the resident doctors for the strike were not cogent enough to warrant industrial action as they were administrative issues that were at the discretion of the management.”
