An Ogudu Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a fruit seller, Lawal Hammed, to six months imprisonment for stabbing his colleague, Rabiu Oseni, with a knife.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Hammed had pleaded guilty to a one-count charge of unlawfully assault. The convict, who sells fruits at mile 12, Lagos, had admitted that he stabbed Oseni in the stomach, during an argument.

Magistrate I.O. Aje-Afunwa sentenced him to six months imprisonment without an option of fine. “The action of the accused is condemnable and he is hereby sentenced to six months imprisonment without an option of fine. I hope the sentence will serve as a deterrent to others,” Afunwa said.

The prosecutor, Cpl. Kemi Adeniran, told the court that Hammed had on Nov. 8 at about 1:00p.m. at Mile 12 Market, Lagos, stabbed Oseni in the stomach during an argument. Adeniran said the offence contravened Section 171 of the Criminal Code, Law of Lagos State, 2011.
